Poemjazz: Laurence with Robert Pinsky at Harlen Adams Theatre - Chico, CA

  • Harlen Adams Theatre

Robert Pinsky, the 39th U.S. Poet Laureate, has created an intimate evening of poetry and music with Grammy Award-winning jazz pianist, composer, and arranger Laurence Hobgood. Poemjazz intertwines language and instrument, emphasizing the physical and melodic qualities of voice as well as the way jazz improvisation can sometimes seem to speak a language all its own.

Laurence with ETHEL, Metropolitan Museum Balcony Bar

  • Metropolitan Museum/Balcony Bar

Excited to join my great friends ETHEL for two evenings of string quartet and piano, playing some of the arrangements I've written for my new project 'tesseterra'; the Balcony Bar at the Metropolitan Museum is a very cool spot -- and there's NO COVER!

We'll play sets at 5pm and 7pm both nights; each set will be essentially the same program.

Please come hang -- there's no better election 'hangover' remedy!

Barb Jungr is delighted to return to Joe’s Pub with a major new album and live project, which marks her return to Linn Records Jazz Roster.

Released in February 2016 in the UK and April in the USA, Shelter From The Storm sees Barb, regarded as one of the finest interpreters of popular song, join hands across the Atlantic in a collaboration with Laurence Hobgood, the American progressive and contemporary jazz piano virtuoso. This exciting new album project was recorded at Sear Sound Studio NYC with Calum Malcolm at the controls and is co-produced by Calum, Laurence and Barb.

In his first major collaboration since his work with Kurt Elling (with whom he won a Grammy for the album, Dedicated To You: Kurt Elling Sings the Music of Coltrane and Hartman), Laurence Hobgood said: “I’m not just thrilled to be collaborating with Barb Jungr; I’m energized, inspired and downright giddy at having (been) matched with a “musician’s singer” – a superb vocalist whose musical intelligence is its own formidable, evolved force with which to reckon. And the reckoning is a blast!”

Shelter From The Storm includes three original songs by Barb and Laurence, alongside material by Dylan, Cohen, Mitchell, Springsteen, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Sondheim, Peter Gabriel and Bacharach and David.

Barb is featured in an exciting new TV 6-part TV series; a collaboration between CPTV (Connecticut Public Television) and the Kate (the Katherine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center). The first series is scheduled for spring 2016 and each show will highlight the work of bold contemporary performers who break the barriers of their genres. As well as an interview, Barb’s edition features the live concert of Shelter From the Storm recorded at the Kate last September.

"One of the best interpreters of Jacques Brel and Bob Dylan anywhere on this angst ridden planet today" (Village Voice, New York) and "one of the best nightclub singers in the world" (Time Out New York), Jungr is “a fearless iconoclast who dives into the deepest waters of popular song to wrest exotic treasure from the ocean floor" (The New York Times). Her earlier Dylan collection, Barb Jungr Sings Bob Dylan: Every Grain of Sand (Linn Records 2002), which the Wall Street Journal called “the most significant vocal album of the 21st century thus far”, is now regarded as a cult classic album.

“Jungr is mistress of all she surveys.... This music is the North American Songbook’s climax, revealed by its greatest interpreter.” 5-stars (The Independent)

“...a four star show...The most literate of singers, Jungr is the perfect interpreter of this kind of material.” (The Times) Barb Unger.

USA CD Release - "Honor Thy Fathers"

"It's easy to hear similarities between Laurence Hobgood's piano and that of Brad Mehldau, who shares primary influences (Keith Jarrett and Bill Evans). But Hobgood . . . differentiates himself via another cluster of inspirations: Oscar Peterson, Nat "King" Cole and his own father, theater director Burnet McLean. These and other mentors are the focus of his radiant trio record "Honor Thy Fathers" . . . The album is a sublime statement -- perhaps the first of 2016." - Michael J. West's review in JazzTimes magazine's forthcoming March 2016 issue
"★★★★" - Howard Mandel's review in Downbeat magazine's forthcoming March 2016 issue
"The melodic urgency, tonal sheen and improvisational creativity of [Hobgood's] art have reached an apex with 'Honor Thy Fathers' . . . his seemingly effortless virtuosity evident throughout the recording . . . poetic phrasing radiates from the opening track of the album . . . it's quite likely that you'll be thinking about it after the last chord has sounded." - Howard Reich, Chicago Tribune, October 8, 2015John P
